Yahoo! Sports Video Page Redesign
Enhancing the video experience for passionate sports fans, making every moment more immersive, seamless, and enjoyable.
Problem
The Yahoo! Sports video page suffered from high bounce rates because its design, carried over from article pages, confused users. Sports fans found it hard to distinguish between article and video content, leading to a poor video-watching experience. To address this, our Content Tools & Platforms team identified redesigning the video page as a top priority to improve engagement and user satisfaction.
Challenge
I served as the lead designer for a newly assembled team, formed just days before starting this project. We faced a tight two-week sprint cycle to deliver the video page experience, compounded by being understaffed with only three engineers. These constraints required strategic prioritization, close collaboration, and efficient communication to meet our goals.
Solution
To enhance the video-watching experience on desktop and mobile, I redesigned the video player to be larger and more visually prominent, optimizing it for user engagement. I also added a scrollable playlist alongside the video, enabling users to seamlessly browse and access related topics without interrupting their viewing experience.
Impact
The redesign boosted ad completion rates from 33% to 45% and video completion rates from 26% to 42%. These improvements not only enhanced user engagement but also contributed to securing a strategic partnership with OneFootball, a leading global soccer platform.
